APPEARANCE: Medium large robust and
powerful dog, compact and substantially built, calm, confident and courageous.
Black with clearly defined rust markings. Slight longer than height at the
withers in proportion as 9 is to 10, with depth of chest approximately 50% of
height.
HEAD: Medium length, broad, ratio of skull to muzzle is 3 to 2.
Stop: well developed. Broad upper and lower jaws. Eyes: almond
shaped, dark brown. Ears: medium-sized, triangular, pendant, level with
top of head when alert. Muzzle: broad, slight taper. Nose and lips:
always black. Mouth: pigment dark. Bite: scissors. Level
bite and missing teeth, serious fault.
BODY: Neck: moderately long, powerful. Topline: straight and strong,
firm and level to slightly sloping croup. Chest: broad. Slight tuck-up. Tail:
docked short. Feet: compact, round. Dewclaws on rear legs must be removed.
COAT: Double, straight, coarse, dense, medium length, lying flat.
Undercoat: gray, tan or black.
COLOR: Always black with rust to mahogany markings.
GAIT: Strong reach and drive, ground covering.
